Getting into the ‘Swing’ of Things

– With newly appointed golf director, Hein Papenfus

Born in the small town of Philippolis in the Free State (on the back seat of a car, as he laughingly tells us), the new addition to the Eye of Africa family grew up in Bethlehem. He and his wife, Carin, are proud parents to four children who have all ‘flown the nest’ and are succeeding in their careers. Hein now calls the Eye of Africa home, as he and Carin have taken up residence in the estate in their new house at Stone Quarter.

Hein has always been a sports ‘nut’. However, it was only in his mid-twenties that his relationship with the game of golf began. In 1992, he took a job at the Pro Shop at Randfontein Golf Club. It was here that he learnt about the different aspects of golf; from the hospitality element at the club to the green-keeping of the course. Thereafter, Hein went on to make his mark at well-known courses, Ebotse, Houghton and Johannesburg Country Club where he built and nurtured corporate partnerships; something he hopes to do more of at the Eye of Africa.

Hein has been involved in the coordination of an SA Open as well as the Alfred Dunhill Championships. He believes that the facilities, space and environment at the Eye of Africa course lend itself to hosting large-scale, international tournaments.

He says it is a championship golf course and his personal aim is to get it into the top twenty in the country. An approachable and affable man, Hein believes in delivering service excellence with a ‘Can Do’ attitude. His focus is to provide a five-star golfing experience at the Eye of Africa that cannot be matched elsewhere.
